Lord Justice wins stakes finale at Monmouth


Lord Justice, making his first start in 2 1/2 months, led wire to wire to defeat Bunker Hill by a half-length in Sunday's closing-day feature at Monmouth Park, the $70,000 .

Ridden by Chris Decarlo for trainer Todd Pletcher, Lord Justice ($7) covered 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy, sealed track in 1:44.97. Early in the meet, Lord Justice also won the Spend a Buck Stakes.

Bunker Hill was 5 3/4 lengths clear of Precursor, the slight favorite in a field of five 3-year-olds at 2-1.

The 93-day meet averaged 6,949 ontrack fans, a gain of 6 percent over last year. All-sources handle averaged $3,150,749, a 5 percent drop from the 2008 average of $3,308,135. Ontrack handle averaged $409,380, a decline of 5 percent.

Elvis Trujillo won his first Monmouth riding title, finishing with 129 victories.

Bruce Levine dominated the early part of the meet and cruised to a second straight training title, saddling 46 winners.

Repole Stable was the leading owner for the second straight year with 24 winners.

Live racing in New Jersey shifts to the Meadowlands starting Thursday for a 47-day meet that runs through Dec. 5.
