Loose horse hits Fairplex fan

A male racegoer was hospitalized on Sunday after apparently being struck by a loose horse who jumped the outside rail following the 12th race at Fairplex Park, track officials said.

The condition and the identity of the man were not immediately available on Monday afternoon. The person was conscious after the accident while being transported to County USC Medical Center, according to Wendy Talarico, the communications and public relations manager for the Los Angeles County Fair.

The incident occurred after My Lucky Stars unseated jockey Joe Talamo. My Lucky Stars ran to the outside of the racetrack between the sixteenth pole and the finish line where he jumped over the rail. My Lucky Stars walked away and was not believed to be injured.

For Monday's card, the track installed temporary crowd-control barriers on the outside rail from the sixteenth pole to a point 50 yards past the wire.

* Jockey Victor Navarro suffered a broken wrist, broken nose, and five broken ribs after he was unseated from Mi Golondrina in Sunday's seventh race.
