Longshots light up Hanshin

Reginetta led home a parade of longshots in a closely contested but topsy-turvy $2.1 million Oka Sho, or Japanese 1000 Guineas, at Hanshin on Sunday. A 42-1 shot, Reginetta came late to defeat the 93-1 F T Maia by a half-length, with the 9-1 So Magic a neck farther back in third, producing a $68,782 trifecta, the highest ever returned in a Japanese classic.

Trained by Hidekazu Asami and ridden by Futochi Komaki, Reginetta had finished a head third in the March 16 Hochi Hai Fillies Revue, a race won by Meine Ratsel, who ran sixth in the Oka Sho. Just 2 1/2 lengths separated the first nine home on Sunday, with the 2.80-1 favorite, Tall Poppy, eighth, Air Pascale ninth, and Odile 12th. Those last three had been first, second, and third in the March 8 Tulip Sho. The time for the one-turn mile on firm ground was 1:34.40.

By French Deputy out of the Sunday Silence mare Aspen Leaf, Reginetta has now won 3 of her 7 starts and earned $1,374,814.
