Longshots fill trifecta at Calder

MIAMI – Fearless Eagle, the highest price on the board at 48-1, led a parade of longshots across the finish line when outfinishing the 32-1 Sparkling Notion by a half-length to upset the $50,000 Lord Juban Stakes at Calder. Unbridled Music, a 39-1 chance, was third.

Fearless Eagle overcame a slow start to win the 1 1/16-mile race while making both his turf and stakes debut for owner-breeder Isaac Muhtar and trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. The son of Invisible Ink benefited from a nicely judged ride by jockey Roimes Chirinos, saving ground around the second turn while racing within striking distance of the leaders before easing out and overtaking Sparkling Notion in late stretch.

Sparkling Notion forced the pace of 2-1 favorite Drums of Thunder, forged clear in early stretch, but could not resist the winner's final surge. Unbridled Miss rallied from last to finish another length back in third.

Drums of Thunder, making his first start since finishing sixth in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulftream Park on March 3, tired badly once losing the lead and was last in the field of 10 3-year-olds.

Fearless Eagle returned $99 to win and keyed exacta and trifecta payoffs worth $1,500.60 and $18,296.80, respectively.
