Longshots create carryovers in pick five, pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. - There is a pick five carryover of $392,387, a pick six carryover of $87,742, and a super high five carryover of $41,273 for Sunday’s nine-race program at Santa Anita after a string of upset winners on Saturday’s card

Most pick five tickets were eliminated early when Empowering Force ($48) and Well Maybe ($82) won the first two races. It was not easier in the later races in the sequence with wins from Justification ($27.20), Mio Me ($8.40), and Athens ($62.20) in the third through fifth races.

Going into Saturday’s fifth and final leg, Pulling G’s, the 7-5 favorite, was the only horse covered in the pick five, on two tickets. He broke slowly and made a remarkable run on the inside through the stretch, but could only finish second by a half-length to Athens.

The pick five on Sunday covers the first five races and is a 50-cent bet.

There is one early scratch in Sunday’s pick five. In the fourth race, a maiden race over 1 1/8 miles on turf, Milton is withdrawn. The race will have a maximum field of 12.

The other races are a $25,000 claimer over 6 1/2 furlongs to start the program, a maiden race over 6 1/2 furlongs that drew eight horses, a one-mile optional claimer over a mile, and an optional claimer over six furlongs in the fifth race.

The win by Athens eliminated many tickets from the pick six. Later victories by Hugh Knew ($16.80) and Finnegans Wake ($18) made the pick six too difficult.

The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races. The super high five is held on the last race and requires selecting the correct order of the first five finishers.

The program begins at 12:30 p.m. Pacific.
