Longshots 1,2,3 in Racing Post

Heavy ground played havoc with the result of the Racing Post Trophy at Newbury on Saturday as the 25-1 Authorized led home a parade of longshots in the Group 1, $310,000 one-mile turf race for 2-year-olds.

Well behind in 13th at the halfway point on the rain-soaked course, the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Authorized rallied under Frankie Dettori to defeat the 33-1 Charlie Farnsbarns by 1 1/4 lengths, with the 20-1 Medicine Path third, another two lengths back. The Aidan O'Brien-trained 3-5 favorite Eagle Mountain was fourth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths. The winner's time was 1:43.74.

By Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Montjeu out of a mare by Arc winner Saumarez, Authorized has a license to improve as the distances get longer next year. In his only other start this season, he finished third, 1 1/2 lengths back in a one-mile allowance at Newbury on Sept. 15. Impressed by his performance and his bloodlines, the bookies are offering Authorized at only 12-1 for next year's Epsom Derby.

o Newbury's seven-furlong Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes for 2-year-olds was a coup for the Kentucky breeding industry as the first three home were all bred in the Bluegrass State. Dijeerr, a Danzig colt, outgamed Mythical Kid, a son of Lemon Drop Kid, by a head as Striving Storm, a Stormin Fever colt, took third. Trained by Michael Jarvis, Dijeerr was timed in 1:30.66.
