Longshot in Magna 5's last leg

Email

Three favorites, a top contender, and a longshot were winners in Saturday's $2 Magna 5, leading to a payoff of $3,654.80 to 142 ticketholders.

The bet seemed to be on its way to a moderate payoff on Saturday until Verkade pulled a shocking win in the final leg, a seven-furlong optional claimer at Santa Anita.

The winners of the Magna 5 races were Diamond Wildcat ($6.80) in the Horatius Stakes at Laurel, Eddington ($5.20) in the Gulfstream Park Handicap, Declan's Moon ($3.60) in the Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita, High Fly ($4.20) in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and Verkade ($52.40).

Eddington, Declan's Moon, and High Fly were favored, while Diamond Wildcat was the second choice in the betting.

The $2 bet features five races run within an hour at racetracks owned by Magna Entertainment.

Saturday's pool reached $665,864, the second-highest pool of the year and well above the $500,000 guaranteed by Magna.
