Longer better for First Acquital

OCEANPORT, N.J. - First Acquital, the least experienced runner in the field, should draw the most attention Wednesday in the $51,000 first-level allowance for New Jersey-bred fillies and mares at Monmouth Park.

The 3-year-old, making only her third start, looms a solid favorite facing winners for the first time. She will tackle five rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race for trainer Ben Perkins Jr.

First Acquital debuted here on May 29, rallying from 12th to get fifth in a six-furlong race in the slop. A daughter of Volponi out Trial Dancer, a Louis Quatorze mare, First Acquital has a pedigree that suggested she needed more ground.

She got it next time out, responding with a 9 1/4-length win going a mile and 70 yards in the mud. First Acquital earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 64 in the victory, a number that makes her the one to fear in this spot.

"She fits and she's trained really well," Perkins said. "Volponi wasn't much to look at himself, and she's just a little skinny thing that just covers ground."

Her distance profile was the primary reason she did not race at 2 for the Violetta Stable.

"I told the owners that last year didn't matter," Perkins said. "There was no way you would find spots for a New Jersey-bred going long. I told them to give her time, she was worth keeping for the next year. Both sides, she's bred to run long."

Joe Bravo, aboard for both of her races, has the return call.

Faker was a rallying second the last time this race was offered on June 13, a much-improved effort in her third start of the season.

After starting in a pair of sprints, Faker stretched out to a mile and 70 yards and put up a good battle, missing by three-quarters of a length. Daniel Centeno will ride again.

Trainer Pat McBurney is sending out two: Basic Trick and Baba Lilly.

Basic Trick closed out last year with a trio of in-the-money finishes at this level at the Meadowlands. After sprinting in her season debut at the end of May, Basic Trick should benefit from the return to a route. Baba Lilly, third behind Faker last time out, has a record of 1-1-1 in 3 races around two turns. They race uncoupled.

Completing the field are Beautiful Life and Heartbreak Trail.
