Longacres Mile weights assigned

AUBURN, Wash. - At 127 pounds, Captain Steve tops a list of 30 horses weighted for the Aug. 19 running of the Grade 3 $250,000 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs.

Captain Steve is weighted five pounds above El Corredor, who is second on the list at 122 pounds. But neither of them is expected to run in the Mile. Nor is 120-pound third-highweight Performing Magic.

But four horses are grouped at 118 pounds - Blade Prospector, Freedom Crest, Out of Mind, and Smile Again - and two of them might enter the Mile. Expressing interest in the race are the connections of both Blade Prospector, who won the Grade 3 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate in March, and Smile Again, who is coming off a win in the Grade 2 Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood in July.

The three horses weighted at 117 pounds are likely Mile starters.

Makors Mark, a double stakes winner at the current Emerald meeting, and Mike K, who

was second to Budroyale in the 1999 running of the Mile, are the highest-weighted Northwest-based horses in the Mile.

Irisheyesareflying won two high-priced optional claiming races at Santa Anita last winter and has since placed in two graded stakes.

Also weighted in the Mile are: Spinelessjellyfish, 116; Handy N Bold, 115; Red Eye, 115; Crowning Meeting, 114; Edneator, 114; Kid Katabatic, 114; Kittys Link, 113; L'Effaceur, 113; Spicy Stuff, 113; Figlio Mio, 112; Inclinator, 112; Sign of Fire, 112; So Urgent, 112; Advantage, 111; Boulder Hwy, 111; Greenbaypacker, 111; Prodigious, 111; Snohomish Loot, 111; Fleet Pacific, 110; Ceetoit, 100.
