Lone Star: Tyger River may have edge

Email

Tyger River, second in the Jersey Lily Stakes at Sam Houston two starts ago, is one of several contenders in Thursday's wide-open feature at Lone Star, a second-level allowance with a $40,000 claiming option for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Claimed for $10,000 by trainer Laurie Smith in October, Tyger River has earned more than double that amount since, winning twice in five starts this year. Following her runner-up finish in the Jersey Lily, Tyger River was a close third in a third-level allowance over the Lone Star turf on April 28.

Bag of Stars, from the barn of Steve Asmussen, will attempt to rebound off an unusually poor effort at this level last month. After pressing the pace for six furlongs, Bag of Stars caved, finishing last in the field of 11 and earning a Beyer Figure more than 40 points lower than in her previous start.

Wasioto, a narrowly beaten second to the good turf sprinter Queen of Mecca, might enjoy the stretchout to two turns, while Twilight Glow might continue to improve in her third start back from a brief layoff.
