Lone Star Park to race fewer Sundays

Email

The Texas Racing Commission approved the state’s calendar at a meeting last week. Lone Star Park near Dallas will conduct a 50-date meet for Thoroughbreds from April 10 through July 12. There will be no Sunday racing the first two weekends of the meet, as well as June 22, June 29 and July 6, but the meet will run a week later than it did in 2013.

The commission also approved a 26-date Quarter Horse meet for Lone Star for next year, from Sept. 19-Nov. 15.

Retama Park near San Antonio will open and close its Thoroughbred meet a month earlier next year after being granted a 26-date meet that opens Sept. 5 and closes Nov. 29. The track’s 2014 meet for Quarter Horses will be 20 days, from June 6-Aug. 9.

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston was awarded a 30-date meet for Thoroughbreds in a calendar that incorporates Monday racing. The meet will run from Jan. 17-March 9. The track was also granted a 24-date meet for Quarter Horses, from March 20-May 11.

I was in Houston a few years ago and went to Sam Houston and it is a very nice facility and I was shocked that in a state with no gambling except for horse racing, there was hardly anybody at the track on a Friday night.
