Lone Star: Berdelia kicks into gear


GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Berdelia ran down Rockin Regent through the stretch for a three-quarter-length win in the $125,000 fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes.

Rockin Regent held second, a length in front of third-place finisher Timber Jones.

Berdelia raced several lengths off a hot pace, with Magnolia Belle and Rockin' Kate dueling through fractions of 21.75 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.27 for the half-mile. Berdelia kicked into high gear in the stretch, and went on to cover 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.70.

Berdelia paid $6.20 as a slight favorite over eventual fifth-place finisher Rockin' Kate.

Steve Asmussen trains Berdelia for Ro Parra. The Stallion Stakes was the second consecutive stakes win for the filly, who won her maiden last out in the fillies division of the $129,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity.

Berdelia earned $75,000 for the win, her second from four starts. Her earnings now stand at $159,248. Berdelia is a daughter of Wild Zone and was bred by Parra.
