Loder's hot streak continues

Trainer David Loder continued his domination of the British juvenile scene Wednesday when Meshaheer won the Group 3 July Stakes on the second day of Newmarket's July meeting.

An unlucky third in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Hamdan al Maktoum-owned Meshaheer missed the break in the July, yet ran on to be a smooth last-to-first 1 1/4-length winner over the 12-1 Scottish River. By Nureyev out of Grade 1 Santa Maria Handicap winner Race the Wild Wind, Meshaheer, the 1-3 favorite, got the six furlongs on good turf in 1:11.89 with Frankie Dettori aboard.

Loder will now point Meshaheer to the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York on Aug. 22.

Proudwings soars for Germany

Proudwings gave Germany a rare Group 2 victory in Britain when she pressed or dueled virtually throughout on her way to a two-length tally over Heavenly Whisper in the one-mile Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares. Trained by Ralf Suerland and ridden by Yutaka Take, the 5-year-old Dashing Blade mare was sent off at 10-1 despite having taken the Group 2 Prix du Muguet two starts back. She clocked 1:38.73 over the July Course's undulating mile as the 2-1 favorite Danceabout came home a troubled fourth.
