Little Shimmer picking on boys

Little Shimmer, unbeaten in two starts and already proven able to beat the boys, is the likely favorite in Monday's $21,000 Yapavai Futurity at Yavapai Downs. The six-furlong event for 2-year-olds has a full field of 12.

Owned by Ted Ford and trained by Tom Bartol, Little Shimmer has been brilliant at Yavapai in both her outings. She debuted here Aug. 5 against fillies, jumping right out to the lead and winning by 10 lengths while geared down. She tackled males in an Aug. 19 trial for this race. She dueled briefly for the lead and opened up going to the far turn, defeating many of Monday's rivals. O. A. Martinez rides Little Shimmer.

She doesn't have a huge margin for erro. Her most immediate victims in that Aug. 19 trial, Rule by Force and Retrack, are back for more. Rule by Forced, trained by Lyman Rollins, was the 4-5 favorite in that Aug. 19 race. He was coming off a second in a stakes at Turf Paradise in May and then an eight-plus-length romp over maidens here Aug. 6. In the trial, Rule by Force made a wide run but couldn't reel in the filly. Vince Guerra, up for his last two outings, is aboard again.

Retrack made a smashing debut here June 9, defeating maiden by over eight lengths. He was then third in a stakes here June 24. In the Aug. 19 trial, he rallied well but couldn't get to the winner, finishing a neck behind Rule by Force for the place. Miguel Hernandez again rides Retrack.

Wegottagetalong makes his second start on Monday. In his Aug. 19 trial, he dueled for the early lead and powered home to win by nine.
