Litfin's Saratoga plays for Friday, August 11

Email

Those who followed my A.P. Smithwick analysis as it appeared in Thursday's edition of Daily Racing Form cashed a cold exacta of $13.40 and a cold trifecta of $45.80 after the amazing 10-year-old gelding Hirapour outfinished Good Night Shirt and Mauritania to win the prep for the Turf Writers Cup at even money.

I managed to outsmart myself again in this space, however, and our win bet on Good Night Shirt, the 5-2 second choice, went down in flames.

For the record, that's now five of eight win bets given out since July 31 that have finished second. It reminds me of the famous line Kid Twist said to Doyle Lonnegan at the climax of my all-time favorite movie, The Sting: "I said PLACE it on Lucky Dan. That horse is gonna run second!"

Win betting is getting tiresome (and expensive), so let's change things up and play the late pick four on Friday.

RACES 7-10

Sweet Science in the ninth race, the $70,000 Waya Stakes, is going to be the key to this play. She has finished in the money behind the likes of Angara, Honey Ryder, Pommes Frites and Noble Stella - all graded stakes winners - and she handles any course condition. As long as the Waya stays on the turf, she is the single.

Here's the rundown:

7th race: Using #4 Your Hour's Up and #8 Bad Boy Rising, second-time starters trained by Todd Pletcher and Rick Dutrow Jr.

8th race: Using three horses in this third-level allowance/optional claimer on the turf - #3 Minister's Joy, #5 Classic Campaign and #6 Chattahoochee War.

9th race: We stand alone with #5 Sweet Science.

10th race: This looks like one of those anything-goes sprints for maiden claimers where some kind of rational argument can be made for virtually anyone. I'm buying the field, even though it's going to put me a bit over budget.

The bet: $1 pick four part-wheel - 4,8 with 3,5,6 with 5 with ALL. This works out to a 2x3x1x12 ticket that costs $72.
