Literato rallies at Deauville

Literato rallied from last to first at Deauville on Saturday to win a contentious renewal of the Group 2, $175,000 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano for 3-year-olds. The 6-5 favorite, Literato rallied under a perfectly timed ride from Christophe Lemaire to defeat Spirit One by a half-length, covering the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.90 on good ground. Loup Breton finished 2 1/2 lengths back in third and three-quarters of a length in front of the previously unbeaten El Comodin.

The winner of the 1 1/4-mile Group 3 Prix La Force in April, Literato was coming off a second-place finish to Lawman in the 1 5/16-mile French Derby on June 3. Showing no ill effects from his 11-week vacation, the French-bred son of Kendor, trained by French Jean-Claude Rouget, benefited perhaps from the withdrawal of German invader and Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Axxos. In Spirit One, Literato was beating one of last year's leading French 2-year-olds. But Spirit One had run seventh in the French 2000 Guineas and 14th in the French Derby in his previous two outings.

* At Newbury on Saturday, Red Evie returned to her winning ways as she came on late to lead at the finish line in the Group 2, $168,000 Group 2 Hungerford Stakes. The Intikhab filly, send off at 5-1, is trained by Michael Bell and was ridden by Jamie Spencer. She nipped Welsh Emperor by a short head, getting the straight seven furlongs in 1:26.09 on good ground.- Alan Shuback
