Nayborhood Affair got her second stakes victory of the year and impressively defended her title in the $20,700 Matchmaker Stakes for older Nebraska-bred fillies and mares at Lincoln Race Course on Saturday afternoon.
Attending the pace from outside 3-5 favorite Lou Lou Larue in the one-mile race, Nayborhood Affair took a short lead after a half-mile, shook off a challenge from Gracie Jane into the far turn, and then drew off to score by 3 1/4 lengths under regular rider Ashley Dill. She covered the distance in 1:41.20 over a track labeled good and returned $8.40 as the second choice in a field of seven. Gracie Jane narrowly held second by a nose as Jane of Arcadia rallied to be third.
The win boosted Nayborhood Affair's career mark to 8-2-1 from 18 starts and earnings of $95,838 for trainer Steve Hall and her owners/breeders, June and Tressa O'Neill. She had previously won the Orphan Kist Stakes at Fonner Park this spring and was coming off a second to Lou Lou Larue in the six-furlong Bluegrass Stakes here on June 4.
Best Bets
Runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks, IOTAPA drops in class and shortens to a sprint with sharp recent works on the BHP surface. Oaks winner Beholder returned to finish second in the Kentucky Oaks; Oaks third Fiftyshadesofhay was one of the favorites Friday in the Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico. The point is, IOTAPA faced a good bunch last out. She specifically targeted this race, gets pace to run at, loves the track, and can mow them down as the favorite. She must catch two good front-runners.
