Lewys Vaporizer delivered as a slight favorite Monday in the $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint at Mahoning Valley, leading virtually every step of the way for a 1 1/2-length score, his first stakes victory.

Lewys Vaporizer ($6), under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., led by 1 1/2 lengths after a quarter-mile in 22.92 seconds and held a 2 1/2-length advantage after a half-mile in 45.79. He hit the top of the stretch with a 4 1/2-length lead and had more than enough to hold off runner-up Bayerd, stopping the clock for six furlongs on a fast track in 1:12.05.

Bayerd, the third choice, who pressed the pace in third most of the way under Ricardo Santana Jr., finished 5 1/4 lengths clear of third-place Hebbronville. They were followed by Sharm, Tanner’s Popsicle, Proper Touch, On Spirit River, and Bobby’s Dream in the field of eight 3-year-olds.

Trained by Larry Rivelli for V-Leaf Stables LLC and Richard Ravin, Lewys Vaporizer entered the race off a close third-place finish behind Hebbronville and Bayerd in the $100,000 Perryville Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup Saturday card at Keeneland on Oct. 31. Lewys Vaporizer, a gelding by Lewis Michael, had scored front-running wins in a $22,500 allowance for Illinois-breds at Arlington Park in August and an $88,100, first-level allowance at Parx Racing in September.

In 10 career starts, Lewys Vaporizer has five wins and three third-place finishes for $243,560 in earnings.

Earlier on Monday’s card, the favored Heykittykittykitty and Donita’s Ruler finished in a dead heat in the $75,000 Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Distaff Stakes, but Heykittykittykitty was awarded the victory when Donita’s Ruler was disqualified and placed second for interference.

Donita’s Ruler, under jockey Walter De La Cruz, had led throughout the six-furlong race, setting fractions of 23.57 and 47.08, before drifting out down the lane and impeding the progress of Heykittykittykitty and jockey Santana. The final time for six furlongs was 1:12.51.

Heykittykittykitty, trained by Ron Moquett for Westrock Stables LLC, has won 10 of 21 starts for $496,511. The 4-year-old Tactical Cat filly entered the race off a win in the $118,900 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint for statebreds at Remington Park in October.
