'Lethal' is top pick in Os West

PORTLAND, Ore. - Lethal Grande will be a short price to win Saturday's $26,010 Os West Oregon Futurity, the richest of five stakes on the Oregon-bred Day card at Portland Meadows.

More than $80,000 will be up for grabs on the 11-race program, which includes four starter handicap races, a maiden special weight race, and a claiming race as well as the stakes. All are restricted to statebreds.

Lethal Grande, who will be coupled in the wagering with Badcopnodonut, stands out in the one-mile Futurity, which has drawn a field of 10. The speedy son of Corslew comes off easy wins in the five-furlong OTBA Sales Stakes and the six-furlong Bill Wineberg, and he has given no indication that another quarter mile will be an obstacle. Owner and trainer Pat Sonnen has named Juan Gutierrez to ride.

Lethal Grande should be challenged by Ransome Road, who was a distant second in the Wineberg, and the impressive recent maiden winner Rio Handfull.

Sonnen and Gutierrez will team up with two other strong favorites in stakes races on Saturday. Lammy, a double stakes winner at the meet, appears to be the one to beat in the Jane Driggers Debutante Stakes for juvenile fillies at six furlongs, and six-time local stakes winner Tomtom Tommalice is a certain choice in the Oregon Sprint Championship at six furlongs.

The two stakes for 3-year-olds appear to be toss-ups, with Free Falling, Missy Muffet, and Alyssa Lou doing battle in the one-mile Oregon Hers and Fly Buddy Fly, Viva Lavilla, and Yesss clashing in the Oregon His at 1 1/16 miles.
