Lennyfromalibu shocks 'em

ARCADIA, Calif. - Lennyfromalibu provided the shock result of the California Cup with a front-running win in the $175,000 Mile.

Tenth in the 2002 Cal Cup Mile, Lennyfromalibu was allowed to set slow fractions of 23.74 and 47.77 seconds before repelling Menacing Dennis and pulling clear to win by two lengths.

Ridden by Ryan Fogelsonger Lennyfromalibu ($52.20) ran a mile on turf in 1:34.84 to score his first stakes win.

"He was out there cruising so easy," Fogelsonger said.

Continental Red, the 2002 California-bred horse of the year, stalked the pace in fourth and rallied in the final sixteenth to finish second, a head in front of Menacing Dennis, who attended the pace throughout.

Sea to See, the 2-1 favorite, finished fifth in the field of 11. Native Desert, who won the 1999 and 2001 Cal Cup Miles, finished eighth in his sixth appearance in the race.

Lennyfromalibu races for owner-breeder Madeline Auerbach and trainer Barry Abrams. The upset ended a six-race losing streak for Lennyfromalibu, a 4-year-old gelding by Unusual Heat who has won 3 of 13 starts and $220,026. His previous wins came in a maiden race at Del Mar in August 2002 and an allowance race on turf at the 2002 Oak Tree meeting.
