Ledbury goes for win No. 5

CALGARY, Alberta - Ledbury seeks to become the first five-time winner at this meet in Friday's featured eighth race at Stampede Park.

Ledbury began his streak in a $5,500 claimer April 19, and followed it with a pair of victories at the $8,000 level, and a win against $15,000 company May 31.

His progress has not gone unnoticed. Ledbury, a 5-year-old gelding, has been claimed out of each of his past three outings. He races for Bar None Ranches Friday.

The one-mile race for $15,000 claimers drew a full field of nine and Ledbury breaks from post 7. Quincy Welch replaces regular rider Desmond Bryan, who is serving a five-day suspension that runs through closing day, June 16.

Ledbury has led at every call in his previous two wins at this distance and can expect challenges from Mr McClelland, Randy Andy, and Ryan on Broadway during the early stages of the $13,800 feature.

Shivermetimber, who fell a neck shy of overtaking Ledbury last time, would benefit from brisk early fractions.

Keller decision pays off in win

A driving rain greeted trainer Ernie Keller when he arrived at his barn last Sunday, and his first thought was to call the stewards' office to scratch Rancour from the Herald Gold Plate. The gelding was winless from five outings over wet surfaces, but Keller decided to have his blacksmith apply mud caulks and hope for the best.

His decision proved wise as Rancour, benefiting from a superb ride from Welch, came through a small opening along the rail turning for home to post a one-length victory over They Call Me Cody.
