Lawbook best in Affirmed

Email

Lawbook put himself into position to become the fifth horse to sweep the open division of the Florida Stallion Stakes when he rallied to an easy 4 1/4-length victory over Supah Blitz in the $125,000 Affirmed Stakes at Calder on Saturday. Trust N Luck, the 4-5 favorite, lost his jockey, Gary Boulanger, after wheeling at the break of the seven-furlong dash.

Lawbook, who also won the opening leg of the series, the six-furlong Dr. Fager Stakes, rated off the pace of Kissin Bold, rallied three wide to gain command at the head of the stretch, then drew off readily under jockey Roger Velez. Supah Blitz finished well to be second, 7 1/2 lengths before The Name's Bond.

Lawbook is owned and trained by Thomas Heard Jr. He paid $6.40 after covering the distance in 1:24.56 over a fast track.

Susan's Girl: Ivanavinalot does

Ivanavinalot, fourth as the 8-5 favorite following a poor start in the Desert Vixen Stakes, had no such problems in Saturday's $125,000 Susan's Girl when setting the pace throughout before pulling away to a convincing 10-length win over Heavenly Miss.

Fortunate Card, who defeated Heavenly Miss to win the Desert Vixen, finished a tiring third in a field of eight juvenile fillies.

Ivanavinalot, the 6-5 favorite despite her fourth-place finish in the Desert Vixen, paid $4.60. Her final time of 1:24.41 was .15 seconds faster than Lawbook ran the same distance winning the Affirmed. She was ridden to victory by Manoel Cruz for trainer Kathleen O'Connell.
