Whiskey Romeo went straight to the lead under jockey Stewart Elliott in Saturday's inaugural running of the $125,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park, and he never relinquished that lead.
Cruising under the finish line in 1:11.70 for the six-furlong distance on the fast main track, Whiskey Romeo was being gently geared down by Elliott as he beat Amerigo Vespucci by 7 1/2 lengths, with Alpha Mike Foxtrot another 1 3/4 lengths back in third.
"It was very impressive," Elliott said. "I let him run a little bit the last part but wrapped up on him at the end. I worked him a couple times and knew he has some talent. He looked like he was the speed of the race, so the plan was to get to the front, and he did it easy."
Tony Dutrow trains Whiskey Romeo ($3.20) for owner Morris Bailey. A 2-year-old son of Forestry, Whiskey Romeo was sent off as the 3-5 favorite off an impressive maiden victory at Parx Racing in late September.
Best Bets
SLIGO JOE finished third, fourth, or fifth against classier company in each of his last four races. He ran fast enough in his last two starts to beat this type on the plunge from $10,000 optional claiming into this $5,000 N1Y field. LATCH LIGHTING only finished fifth as the favorite at this class level last time. He should be a factor today, but he seems more likely to contend in the minor exotic slots than he is to beat this field. STEALTH HERO ran a dull race when he beat just one opponent here on a muddy track in his last race.
