Laurel, Pimlico to race 146 days in 2014

Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course in Maryland will run 146 live race dates in 2014, along the same lines as the number of live race dates the two tracks ran this year.

The schedule was approved Tuesday by the Maryland Racing Commission after horsemen and officials of the tracks’ parent company, the Stronach Group, presented the plan for approval.

The schedule will provide for 46 live racing days at Laurel to start the year, from Jan. 1 to March 29. Racing will then move to Pimlico for the annual spring meet, running from April 3 to May 17. After Pimlico closes, one day after the Preakness Stakes, live racing will not return to either track until Sept. 5, when Laurel will begin hosting a 65-day meet through the end of the year.

This year, the two tracks are scheduled to hold 146 live racing dates as part of the first year of a 10-year agreement between the Stronach Group and the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association to cooperate on live racing schedules and other racing issues. Purses in Maryland are heavily subsidized by casinos unattached to racetracks in the state, and several political figures have recently called for those subsidies to be cut.

Disappeared Results and Entries: I feel for the old timers at DRF. Now the management wants you to buy the card before you can see who's running. Don't know if you guys are going into the drink, or it's greed, but I'll never give this type of behavior another penny. I'd always like to look through the races before I buy a card. So do all but the hardened gamblers.. You think you have a monopoly on these things, but you'll only succeed in cutting your own business this way.

Both tracks serve purposes for Horsemen and Handicappers. Colonial is a Grand facility with a Great TURF course along with a dirt track.. Timonium is a SPEED handicappers dream and all kinds of racing COUPS $ Tote action ETC. (to the wise)

Colonial is in Virginia, so no one on the Maryland committee forgot them.

They are leaving out the Timonium Fair meet and Colonial which run during the break. There is still a lull in between those but a lot of those days have racing. Colonial is actually a great track, they just need more competitive purses, especially for their turf races. Their turf course is one of the best in the country.

Timonium is a fair, so the racing commission does not include their dates. It is similar in California when they look at the big picture. Colonial was not forgotten, since Colonial is in Virginia, not Maryland.

No racing from May 17th to Sept 5th!?!?!? Lets say someone goes to the Preakness for thier 1st horse racing experience......then they have to wait until September to see a live horse run......in the cold weather at that. And we wonder why no new fans are being generated. Idiots run this sport.

Typo in here. Pimlico's closing day will be June 7, 2014 (Belmont Stakes Day).

That is what was reported in The Baltimore Sun - Pimlico runs April 3rd through June 7th. But Mark D,, after Pimlico closes people can go up Rt. 95 to Delaware Park, where they find a lovely picnic grove situated about the first turn, or they can head over to Charles Town and have a buffet dinner in a tiered dining room facing the track. Both experiences are better than Pimlico - trust me! I live only a few miles north of Pimlico, and would drive to Delaware Park while Pimlico is open.

You hit the nail right on the head...... There is soooooooooo much conflict of interest in racing, that is another huge reason this wonderful sport is dying out....... A sad story
