Laurel Park: Walkwithapurpose romps in Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship
By Marty McGee
Email
Walkwithapurpose dominated all the running when posting her third straight victory and getting her first stakes win Monday in the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md.
With Jeremy Rose riding the homebred filly for Sagamore Farm and trainer Ignacio Correas, Walkwithapurpose made the lead from her rail post easily in the 7 1/2-furlong race and easily turned back her only real challenger at the quarter pole before cruising to an eight-length score. She returned $4.20 as the slight favorite after finishing in 1:32.67 over a fast main track.
Hot Fun, the 11-10 second choice and the filly who loomed the main threat turning for home, finished another length before No Means No. Only five started after Bear Access and Listen Boy were early scratches.
Walkwithapurpose, a bay filly by Candy Ride, finished third in her career debut at Timonium before going through her maiden and her first allowance condition at Laurel in quick order. The Monday race was her fourth start.
The $2 exacta (1-7) returned a mere $8.20.
Best Bets
LORD CHELSIE has been away since February but he has speed and the rail, and given the general lack of pace in this opener he should be able to take advantage of this pace advantage, as long as he breaks alertly and outruns OMINOUS THOMAS for the lead; past success over this strip adds to the appeal. OMINOUS THOMAS failed to make the lead in a shorter race that was loaded with speed last time; back at six furlongs today, and this is a much better race flow for him.
