Laurel: Acrolect surprises Dickinson

Ridden by Jose Caraballo, Acrolect wins the $60,000 Challedon Stakes at Laurel Park with authority in 1:22.59.

Trainer Michael Dickinson sprung another successful invasion of Laurel Park, winning the $60,000 Challedon for Maryland-breds with 6-year-old gelding Acrolect.

Acrolect, the third choice in the betting at 6-1, stalked the pace under Jose Caraballo, opened a two-length lead in upper stretch, and was not threatened the rest of the way.

Aggadan, the 3-5 favorite, closed from fourth to get second, beaten 2 1/2 lengths. Implicit was another head back in third at 20-1. Acrolect ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.59 and paid $15.20.

Acrolect became the fifth horse Dickinson ran at the Laurel meet, and the fourth to win.

"I didn't think he could beat Aggadan," said Dickinson from his training center in Cecil County. "Acrolect is all heart and courage. He had never won a stake and he's 6 years old. I didn't think that was going to change. I would have been delighted for second and truly expected to finish third in this race."
