Last Tycoon, won BC Mile, dead


Last Tycoon, winner of the 1986 Breeders' Cup Mile, has died in retirement in Japan, according to a Thursday report in England's Racing Post newspaper.

According to the story, Last Tycoon died at Arrow Stud in Japan on May 27. The story gave a Coolmore spokesman as the source. The report gave no cause of death for the 23-year-old stallion.

Coolmore owned Last Tycoon during his breeding career and gave the stallion to Arrow Stud after pensioning him in 2004.

Last Tycoon, a son of Try My Best and the Mill Reef mare Mill Princess, was the 1986 champion sprinter in England and France. Bred in Ireland by Kilfrush Stud, he raced for R.C. Strauss with Robert Collet as trainer. Last Tycoon won 8 of his 13 starts, including the Group 1 King's Stand and William Hill Sprint Championship.

His best progeny include 1994 English champion and multiple Group 1 winner Ezzoud; Group 1 winners Marju, Lost World, and Bigstone; 1994 Australian Horse of the Year Mahogany; New Zealand Horse of the Year Tycoon Lil; and several other champions in Europe, Hong Kong, and South Africa.
