Last furlong a challenge for Siwa

EmailETOBICOKE, Ontario - Siwa will try to extend her speed out to nine furlongs Saturday at Woodbine in the Carotene Stakes, a $150,000 turf race for Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies.

Siwa has had a productive year for trainer Kevin Attard, who sent her out to beat older opponents in the June 17 Zadracarta Stakes. She earned a fat 93 Beyer Figure in that six-furlong turf dash, setting slow fractions on a clear lead en route to a three-length tally.

In her next outing, Siwa got cooked in a speed battle in the Ontario Damsel Stakes, and then finished fifth in the Rainbow Connection Stakes at Fort Erie. She led all the way in her most recent start, the one-mile La Prevoyante Stakes against Ontario-sired stock.

Attard said the distance of Saturday's race is a major concern.

"A mile and an eighth, obviously, is going to be stretching it for her," said Attard. "She ran a gritty race going a mile. It looked like they were getting to her, but they couldn't get by her. We hope we can harness that speed for an extra eighth."

Dance to My Tune could take the first run at Siwa in what will be her first trip over the grass. She was second in two consecutive stakes in August and September, and then won her first stakes here two weeks ago, the 1 1/16-mile La Lorgnette.

Trainer Dave Cotey said Dance to My Tune, who is by Stravinsky, has a license to handle the unfamiliar footing.

"She's never even galloped on the turf, but she has a tremendous pedigree for it," said Cotey. "She's a gorgeous mover, but until they do it, you don't know."

Cotey said he has no qualms with running Dance to My Tune back on short rest, adding that she has been dragging her exercise rider around the track.

"We've just been training her lightly, because she's fit enough," said Cotey. "If she was sulking or lethargic or off her feed, I'd be concerned, but she's just the opposite."

Trainer Roger Attfield entered Sans Souci Island and Dancer's Fan.

Sans Souci Island won her first two starts in the spring, including a first-level allowance. She subsequently finished seventh in both the Wonder Where and Ontario Colleen stakes.

Dancer's Fan has been laid up since running second in a $40,000 conditioned claimer Aug. 12.

Moon Path, who closed along the rail from 10 lengths back to end up fourth in the La Prevoyante, completes the field.
