Lantana Mob survived a six-way battle for the early lead to win the $60,000 Tyro Stakes for 2-year-olds on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

The Tyro is the prep for the meet's biggest juvenile stakes, the Grade 3 Sapling on Sept. 2.

With Stewart Elliott aboard for trainer Steve Asmussen, Lantana Mob ($4.40) beat Spanky Fishbein by 1 1/2 lengths with Run Sully Run third. The time was 1:03.83 for 5 1/2 furlongs on the fast, sealed track.

"They told me the horse has some talent but sometimes you have to ask him," said Elliott, who was aboard for the first time. "He was very comfortable to the head of the lane. When I asked him, he took off."

* Indy Win ($3.60) posted a decisive victory in the $70,000 Skip Away Stakes, the prep for the Grade 3, $300,000 Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Stakes here on Aug. 18.

After dueling the pacesetting Too Many Toyz into submission, Indy Wind drew off to a three-length victory over Touched by Madness.

"He's been training so well lately that I knew he'd run a big one," said owner-trainer Amy Tarrant. "This race should set him up perfectly for the Iselin."

Indy Wind, with Mario Madrid aboard, ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.33.

It was the second stakes win in three tries at the meet for the 5-year-old. After winning the Frisk Me Now Stakes on May 28, Indy Wind was a distant third in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile on June 23.

"The Salvator was my fault," Tarrant said. "I told Mario to take back. Today I told Mario to break sharp and try to put him into it early on. That's exactly what he did."
