Jockey Corey Lanerie, a 36-year-old native of Lafayette, La., scored the 3,000th win of his riding career in the third race on Thursday at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Lanerie guided Steve Margolis-trained Native Mambo to a pace-pressing victory in an off-the-turf claiming race for the milestone, which he came up to quickly with a strong recent run at the track.

Lanerie, the son of a jockey turned trainer and grandson of a trainer, began riding sanctioned races in 1991, starting out on the Louisiana circuit before broadening his base. He had great success in Texas, winning four Lone Star riding titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and has continued to win consistently since shifting to the competitive Kentucky-New Orleans circuit. Lanerie’s best year came in 2003, when his mounts won 231 races and earned more than $6.1 million in purses.
