Of the two uncoupled horses trainer Scott Lake ran in the $50,000 Mister Diz Stakes at Laurel Park, bettors liked Cayman Condo a lot better than Lycurgus. But as so often happens in this situation, the longer-priced horse outperformed his stablemate. Lycurgus ($17.40), returning to dirt after eight consecutive starts on turf or Polytrack, came from slightly off the pace to take the lead in the stretch, then held off the 8-year-old Saay Mi Name by a length to win the off-the-turf Mister Diz, which was contested over a muddy strip. Ridden by Josue Arce, Lycurgus is now 3 for 4 over wet tracks after completing the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.98. Cayman Condo, coming off a career-best 106 Beyer Speed Figure in a restricted stakes over a wet-fast track, finished fourth as the even-money favorite. A 5-year-old gelding who was running for an $18,000 claiming tag in February, Lycurgus came close to winning a stakes last month when he rallied to get third, beaten less than a length, in the Maryland Million Turf Sprint.
