Lady's Purse heads filly showcase

EmailPORTLAND, Ore. - Two-year-old Oregon-breds will be showcased on Sunday when the track presents twin six-furlong stakes, each with a purse of $20,000. The Janet Wineberg for fillies has drawn a field of 10, while the Bill Wineberg for colts and geldings has lured eight.

Lady's Purse looms as the one to beat in the Janet Wineberg after winning two of three starts, including the Kindergarten Stakes at five furlongs in March and a recent allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs. Lady's Purse, a daughter of Bagshot trained by G.D. Khalsa, scored by six lengths in her prep on Oct. 16, defeating males in 1:06.

Lady's Purse will face stern opposition from a three-horse entry from the barn of trainer Cookie Root: impressive maiden winner Jimbos Fire Ant, three-time winner Maxie's Night Cap, and the maiden Ochoco Flame.

Taking a page out of Root's book, trainer Jim Fergason will send out three in the Bill Wineberg. Works Lika Bullet and Jimmie the Grouch, both owned in part by Just Horsen Around Stable, will race as a coupled entry. Rogerbur, who races for owner Dean Honrath, will race as a separate entry.

Fergason's two betting interests seem likely to vie for favoritism, as Rogerbur is coming off a strong second to Washington-bred Snowbound Tiger in the OTOBA Sales Stakes on Oct. 21 and Jimmie the Grouch is exiting a game debut win over maiden special weight company on Oct. 7.
