Lady Shari rallies to take Mazarine

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot Lady Shari overhauled favored Jealous Forum in the final strides to capture the Grade 1, $283,250 Mazarine Breeders' Cup Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine on Saturday.

Platel led the way in the 1 1/16-mile race through fractions of 23.20 seconds and 47.25 while being tracked by Jealous Forum. Lady Shari saved ground while racing seven lengths off the early pace, and commenced her rally on the far turn.

Jealous Forum blew by Platel at the head of the stretch and had a 2 1/2-length lead at the eighth pole, but Lady Shari came charging up the rail in deep stretch to win by a neck. Mulrainy was another length back in third in the nine-horse field. The final time was 1:46.99.

"I wanted to sit back early," said Constant Montpellier, who rode the winner. "There was a lot of speed in the race, and the plan was to give her good run at the end, and she did."

Lady Shari ($38.20) earned $169,950 for trainer Dave Cotey, who owns the filly in partnership with Hugh Galbraith and Derek Ball.

*Bold 'n Fancy ($7.30) won the first of Saturday's two supporting features, the $60,160 H.J. Addison Jr. Stakes, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.54 under Jake Barton.

Time to Decide ($15.10) prevailed in a stretch battle with favored Cafe Dancer to take the other stakes on the card for graduates of local sales, the $61,840 H.A. Hindmarsh. With Jim McAleney riding, she covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.77.
