Lady Shakespeare to have surgery

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lady Shakespeare, winner of the Grade 2 New York at Belmont Park in her last start at on June 19, is scheduled to undergo surgery this week and probably will be out of action until late fall.

"She's come up with a condylar fracture in her right hind," said Roger Attfield, who trains Lady Shakespeare for her owner and breeder, Charles Fipke

"It was after just an easy canter, her first day back to the track, that we knew there was a problem."

Lady Shakespeare, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old filly, recorded her most important victory to date in the New York, a 1 1/4-mile turf race.

Attfield had planned to have Lady Shakespeare make her next appearance in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly, a 1 1/8-mile turf race here July 18, as a stepping-stone to the Grade 1 Beverly D. over 1 3/16 miles of turf at Arlington on Aug. 21.

"She'll be fine," said Attfield. "It just messes us up, for the Breeders' Cup and everything."
