Lady Joanne in foal

Lady Joanne, winner of the Grade 1 Alabama last August at Saratoga, has been retired from racing and is in foal to Mr. Greeley, trainer Carl Nafzger confirmed Wednesday.

Nafzger and owner Bentley Smith had planned to bring Lady Joanne back for her 4-year-old season, but the lingering effects of an injury suffered when she was fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff prevented them from doing so.

Nafzger said Lady Joanne tore the superior check ligament in a front leg in the Distaff, which was contested over a sloppy Monmouth Park main track last October.

"We gave her time, but it was not going to let me get her back to where she was, so we just retired her," Nafzger said.

Lady Joanne, a daughter of Orientate out of the dam Oatsee, had a record of 6-2-2 from 11 starts and earned $987,094. In addition to the Alabama, Lady Joanne won the Grade 2 Golden Rod at 2 and the Grade 3 Dogwood and the overnight Banshee Breeze at 3. She is a half-sister to the multiple Grade 3 winner Baghdaria.
