Lady Blue Sky looks for 7th straight win

The claiming game can be a hit-or-miss proposition, but owner-trainer Don Roberson wound up hitting for extra bases when he haltered Lady Blue Sky for $5,000 at Mountaineer last June 10. Though it took the 4-year-old filly nearly four months to win another race, when she finally did it came in the $40,000 Richmond Stakes at Hoosier Park.

Seven months on from that victory in the Richmond, Lady Blue Sky can't stop winning. She will seek her seventh consecutive win Friday night in the $45,000 Shelby County Stakes at Indiana Downs. There have been a couple close calls in the interim, but trips to Charles Town, Fair Grounds, Delta Downs, Evangeline Downs, and Prairie Meadows each yielded a victory.

The Shelby County, restricted to Indiana-bred and -sired fillies and mares, will be contested at six furlongs, a distance that should not pose any problems for Lady Blue Sky, who is as adept around one turn as she is around two.

The top two finishers from the 2006 Shelby County have returned for this year's renewal. Missy's Queen, the defending champion, also won the Merrillville Stakes at Hoosier Park last year. Free Bonus, runner-up to Missy's Queen, also finished second to Lady Blue Sky in the Richmond. Both mares enter the Shelby County off losses in their season debuts.

Bettors thinking about exotic wagers will also want to consider President's Woman, Basin Banannie, Sierra Lily, and Dixie Dell in their plans.
