Lacie Girl wins Orinda Handicap

ALBANY, Calif. - Lacie Girl ($3.40) maintained her perfect record in Northern California, defeating Onslaught by 2 1/4 lengths in the $63,950 Orinda Handicap on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Lacie Girl, now 5-for-5 in Northern California, rebounded from her only loss, a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita, to record an easy victory, while clocking 1:09.58 for six furlongs over a good track.

Onslaught and Fertile battled head and head through opening fractions of 21.76 and 44.55 as Lacie Girl sat in fourth place five lengths behind the leaders while racing three wide down the backstretch.

She moved up steadily on the turn and clearly had Onslaught measured in the stretch.

"My only concern was keeping her happy," said winning rider Russell Baze, who has been aboard for all five of Lacie Girl's victories. "I was hoping to keep her face in the clear so she'd want to run.

"I was planning on laying a little closer, but once they outbroke her, she took herself back. She's got a lot of talent, but you've gotta keep after her."

Lacie Girl, a 4-year-old daughter of Editor's Note trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, earned $33,800 to lift her career earnings to $120,200.
