Lacie Girl continues streak in Richmond Handicap

ALBANY, Calif. - Lacie Girl ($3.20), unbeaten in Northern California and at six furlongs, made up five lengths in the final quarter mile, edging Onslaught by a head in the $60,550 Richmond Handicap on Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

Onslaught, first or second in her past five dirt sprints, broke sharply and opened a clear lead down the backstretch. A loser by 2 1/4 lengths to Lacie Girl in the Jan. 25 Orinda Handicap, she finished well but couldn't hold off her rival. Lacie Girl ran her final quarter in 23.34 seconds to win the six-furlong stakes in 1:09.26 after trailing by more than seven down the backstretch.

"I thought she did a great job today," winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. "I was a little surprised to see her in last (actually sixth of seven), but she was carrying 121 pounds. She did a great job carrying that weight."

Jockey Russell Baze, now 6-for-6 on Lacie Girl, said, "I had to ride her hard all the way. That's just the way she is. I was pretty confident turning for home because she's got a potent kick, but I was awfully happy when she did get to the lead."

Lacie Girl has won 6 of 7 career starts. She earned $33,550 to lift her career total to $153,750.
