La Nez scores in Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies

Email

ARCADIA, Calif. - La Nez ($6.40), dropping back into a restricted race after finishing third in the Grade 1 Darley Debutante at Del Mar, ran down pacesetter Camille C in the final yards to score a 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 California Cup Juvenile Fillies on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Whispering Hush finished another two lengths back in third. Eric Kruljac trains both La Nez and Whispering Hush.

Kruljac is also co-owner of La Nez, a 2-year-old filly by Storm Creek, with Nezi Simmons.

La Nez completed seven furlongs on Pro-Ride in 1:23.29. The win was her second in five starts, but she has finished in the money every time.

Mike Smith picked up the mount, replacing Victor Espinoza, who traveled to Hoosier Park to ride Misremembered in the Indiana Derby.

Kruljac said he had no immediate plans for La Nez, and might even be inclined to give her a breather.
