La Cucaracha wins at York

La Cucaracha sped to victory in the $396,000 Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Thursday, adding a Group 1 victory to her listed and Group 3 scores earlier this spring.

A Barry Hills-trained daughter of Piccolo, La Cucaracha (7-1) was guided through the straight five furlongs by Michael Hills in 56.82 seconds, just .62 of a second off Oasis Dream's 2003 track record. The Tatling was an unlucky head behind in second. His rider, Ryan Moore, said after the race that his saddle had slipped late in the game.

Chineur, the 2-1 French invader, missed the break, and although he closed with a rush, was still 2 1/4 lengths behind at the finish in ninth place.

In the Group 2, $153,000 Lowther Stakes, Flashy Wings remained undefeated after four starts with a length victory over La Chunga. The 10-11 Flashy Wings covered the six furlongs in 1:10.14 to remain Britain's leading juvenile filly.

* At The Curragh on Saturday, Horatio Nelson, an Aidan O'Brien-trained 2-year-old colt, will go in the seven-furlong Group 2 Futurity Stakes, a race O'Brien has won four times in the last six years with Oratorio, Van Nistelrooy, Hawk Wing, and Giant's Causeway.
