Ky's Quest makes 2007 bow

Ky's Quest established himself as the top New Mexico-bred juvenile of 2006 when he romped by 9 1/2 lengths in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile at Zia Park Nov. 12. He showed he intended to keep his position at the top of the pecking order with a six-length win in Sunland's Red Hedeman Mile Dec. 30.

Ky's Quest makes his 3-year-old debut Saturday in the $125,000 Pepsi Cola Handicap, a six-furlong event for New Mexico-breds.

On paper, Ky's Quest looks dominant. Owned and trained by Clifford Lambert, Ky's Quest graduated in the slop at Ruidoso last July and then won the Dale Wood there, again in the slop, Sept. 4. His victories at Zia Park and Sunland came on fast footing, so it's not like he's just some mudlark. Casey Lambert rides again at high weight of 123 pounds.

The two with the best chance to upset Ky's Quest are Z Z Dome and Shaken the Cage.

Z Z Dome, owned by James Howard and trained by the red-hot Todd Fincher, graduated gamely here Dec. 22 in his second start, then romped over allowance foes by 7 1/2 lengths here Jan. 13. He earned a 77 Beyer Speed Figure in that race and may be ready for this class hike.

Fincher has won with 7 of his first 16 starters here this meet. Duane Sterling rides.

Shaken the Cage comes here on the upswing for owner Gary Thompson and trainer Rick Terry. After a couple of solid allowance outings this fall he may well have turned the corner going a mile here Jan. 2. He dueled on the pace and then drew off to win with ease by 6 1/4 lengths. Miguel Perez rides.
