Korbyn Gold romps at Turfway

Korbyn Gold swooped past a pair of front-runners nearing the quarter pole and went on to an 8 1/4-length triumph Monday in the inaugural running of the $50,000 St. Patrick's Day Handicap at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Owned by the Scarlet Stable and trained by Mike Maker, Korbyn Gold returned $10.80 as third choice in a field of eight older horses. Victor Lebron was aboard.

Lady Belsara, the even-money favorite and the lone mare in the field, contested fractions of 21.92 and 44.71 seconds over Polytrack, with Timbucto just to her outside. That pair was no match for a sudden burst from Korbyn Gold, a gray 7-year-old gelding who now has won 15 of 48 starts. He completed six furlongs in a swift 1:08.73.

Atticus Kristy rallied to finish second, with Lady Belsara another half-length back in third.

Turfway normally is dark on Mondays but was partly making up for recent cancellations with a nine-race program. Racing resumes Wednesday.
