King of Rome wins at Leopardstown

Lord Admiral did his Arlington Million prospects little good at Leopardstown on Thursday evening, when he finished two lengths second to King of Rome in the Group 3, $109,000 Meld Stakes. The 3-year-old winner, only sixth in the German Derby on July 6, covered the 1 1/4 miles on good to firm ground in 2:04.05 as the 6-5 favorite, capping a big day for his trainer, Aidan O'Brien, who had earlier showed off a sharp looking 2-year-old.

That was Rip Van Winkle, who woke up in time to run down Cuis Ghaire in the Group 3, $109,000 Tyros Stakes. Awarded a seven-furlong Curragh maiden via disqualification in his debut, the 7-5 Galileo colt prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths, getting the seven furlongs in a tepid 1:30.72.

Previously undefeated in three starts, the Galileo filly Cuis Ghaire had won the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was attempting to give trainer Jim Bolger his third straight Tyros victory after Teofilo and New Approach, both of whom went on to capture the European juvenile championship, but couldn't last after leading until inside the final furlong.
