Kid Grindstone wins the Grade 3, $100,000 Fifth Season Breeders' Cup by a length at Oaklawn Park.

Kid Grindstone closed with a rush through the stretch to catch Arch Hall and Greater Good and win the Grade 3, $100,000 Fifth Season Breeders' Cup by a length at Oaklawn Park on Wednesday. Arch Hall, the even-money favorite, held second, 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Greater Good.

Kid Grindstone ($20.20) trailed the field early, as Greater Good jumped out to the lead in his first start in blinkers and set fractions of 23.88 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, 48.23 for the half-mile, and 1:12.86 for six furlongs. Kid Grindstone began to move up past the half-mile pole, continued to advance on the final turn, and closed with good energy to cover the 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:43.78.

Jesse Campbell rode Kid Grindstone for trainer Mike Campbell.

Kid Grindstone earned $60,000 for the win, which was his fifth from 15 career starts. He has now earned $147,317. A 4-year-old by Grindstone, Kid Grindstone races for Wexler Stables.
