Key Largo stretches out in Harry Jeffrey

Email

After disappointing as a well-backed second choice last time out, Key Largo will try to redeem himself Saturday in the $30,000 Harry Jeffrey at Assiniboia Downs.

A 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds, the Harry Jeffrey is the local prep for the $75,000 Manitoba Derby, which will be run over 1 1/8 miles on the Monday, Aug. 2, program.

Key Largo is the only Harry Jeffrey entrant who has won going as far as one mile, although his Churchill and Gulfstream wins at that distance came at one turn.

While he was a flat fourth in the six-furlong Golden Boy on June 19, Key Largo should like the two turns and added distance here. He will break from post 2 under new rider Larren Delorme.

Cherokee Goal, the runner-up in the Golden Boy, will run beyond six furlongs for the first time. Juan Crawford retains the mount on Cherokee Goal, who was racing with Lasix for the first time in the Golden Boy and has since worked a sharp four furlongs.

Gone in a Flash ships in from Northlands Park and is coming off a second-place finish in the six-furlong Western Canada. He has speed and the rail, but the distance is a question mark. Janine Stianson will ride.

Sea Webb, 2 for 2 at Assiniboia Downs this season, also will be stretching out and has displayed a front-running style. Jockey Vicky Baze will ride again.

Rounding out the field will be Mankata Strike, Quaker Shaker Tony, and Caesar’s Monkey.

Rematch of Chantilly one-two

The $20,000 Bobby Stewart Memorial will be the supporting feature Saturday.

A 7 1/2-furlong allowance for 3-year-old fillies, the race will feature a rematch between Honorable Lady and Ruby’s Big Band, the one-two finishers in the Chantilly on June 18.

Stewart led the jockey standings at Assiniboia six times and posted 724 winners in Winnipeg. A back ailment forced him to retire in 1976, and he died in 1985 at age 41.
