Despite her dominant form this year, Untapable will probably have 13 rivals in the May 2 Kentucky Oaks.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Even with the likelihood of a heavy favorite in Untapable, racing officials at Churchill Downs in Louisville are expecting a full gate of 14 3-year-old fillies for the 140th Kentucky Oaks on May 2.

At this early juncture, Churchill is listing at least 19 fillies as possible for the Grade 1, $1 million Oaks, with Untapable being the points leader under the same type of eligibility system in place for the Kentucky Derby.

Among those listed, only House Rules is regarded as iffy, and that’s because of trainer Allen Jerkens’s longstanding reluctance to ship his horses. Otherwise, the field is coming into focus, with one of the major story lines being Rosie Napravnik in search of a second Oaks victory in a three-year span. Napravnik, the regular rider of Untapable, became the first female jockey to win the Oaks when prevailing aboard Believe You Can in 2012.

As of Wednesday, these were the 14 preferred fillies on the Oaks list: Untapable, Sugar Shock, Fashion Plate, Awesome Baby, In Tune, My Miss Sophia, Rosalind, Euphrosyne, Room Service, Got Lucky, Aurelia’s Belle, House Rules, Ria Antonia, and Kiss Moon.

Those needing defections, in order, are Fiftyshadesofgold, Unbridled Forever, Sweet Reason, Thank You Marylou, and Empress of Midway.

Last year, the first for the points system, 11 fillies were entered, with 10 ultimately starting after Flashy Gray was scratched.

The Oaks can be carded with as many as 18 on the program, including four also-eligibles. Entries will be taken April 29.
