Kentucky Oaks: Full field of 14 expected

Despite her dominant form this year, Untapable will probably have 13 rivals in the May 2 Kentucky Oaks.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Even with the likelihood of a heavy favorite in Untapable, racing officials at Churchill Downs in Louisville are expecting a full gate of 14 3-year-old fillies for the 140th Kentucky Oaks on May 2.

At this early juncture, Churchill is listing at least 19 fillies as possible for the Grade 1, $1 million Oaks, with Untapable being the points leader under the same type of eligibility system in place for the Kentucky Derby.

Among those listed, only House Rules is regarded as iffy, and that’s because of trainer Allen Jerkens’s longstanding reluctance to ship his horses. Otherwise, the field is coming into focus, with one of the major story lines being Rosie Napravnik in search of a second Oaks victory in a three-year span. Napravnik, the regular rider of Untapable, became the first female jockey to win the Oaks when prevailing aboard Believe You Can in 2012.

As of Wednesday, these were the 14 preferred fillies on the Oaks list: Untapable, Sugar Shock, Fashion Plate, Awesome Baby, In Tune, My Miss Sophia, Rosalind, Euphrosyne, Room Service, Got Lucky, Aurelia’s Belle, House Rules, Ria Antonia, and Kiss Moon.

Those needing defections, in order, are Fiftyshadesofgold, Unbridled Forever, Sweet Reason, Thank You Marylou, and Empress of Midway.

Last year, the first for the points system, 11 fillies were entered, with 10 ultimately starting after Flashy Gray was scratched.

The Oaks can be carded with as many as 18 on the program, including four also-eligibles. Entries will be taken April 29.

I also think the derby should have a limit with 14 horses running, 20 horses makes for a difficult race, it is hard to run a race with 20 horses in get a fair outcome, every year at least 5 or 6 horses have no business in the race at all, this makes it more difficult for the horses that have the talent and ability to win to do so, fillies and the colts both should be limited to 14 horses

if that were true giocomo and bird song would have been left out

It doesn't make sense that the boys have 20 and the girls 14. Why not have a Derby and a consolation Derby and limit to 12 starters in each and use the points system to determine entry to each.

There should be some consideration for a easier methods where by a filly can cross over and be eligfible to run in the Kentucky Derby. At the moment they must earn enough points in the male contests so they would have to obtain about 24 points in the male contests. It would seem very difficult under the present rules to become eligible. What are your thoughts?

Guess you don't believe in the saying "Innocent until proven guilty". Steve will probably be guilty because the trainer responsibility rule. Pretty hard for one person to be at four different places at the same time.

If they used point standings for picking posts then you would eliminate horses skipping races like Cairo Prince. California Chrome earned the number 1 spot and should get first pick of post positions. Then go down the list. That way the horses at the bottom will have the worst posts to chose from. Nobody will want to just get in anymore.

I have been saying the same thing for the past 5+ years. why should the Best horse in the field draw the 1 hole (ex Looking at Lucky) and lose the race based on the draw. Whether its points or earnings should go from number 1 on down.

I really like that. The crappiest horses who really shouldn't be there get posts they truly earned. I would also like to see the starting field maxed at on 14 instead of 20

A 14 horse field is a safer to have than a 20 horse field. Even with a 14 horse field you will still have horses Danza make it into the field.

That makes sense!

question why only 14 horses allowed for the fillies but allow 20 for the boys... I happen to like it i wish the derby would limit to 14 horses, that would make the prep races great and no skipping races like candy boy and Cprince...

Agree if the Derby was limited to 14 horses I could see CC at 4-5/even WS at 3-1 and the rest upwards. With 20 horses CC will be 7/5 or so WS 4/1 and a real mess as usual on the long run to the first turn - with at least a few horses getting injured (as usual).

it would be a little tough for anyone going into the turn 14th thru 20 in a race that is 1/8th of a mile shorter. Stand NO chance

last year black onyx scratched early and churchill left the number 1 post position in the gate open. this says that, the churchill officials are admitting that the inside posts are dangerous.

wicked strong will be no less then 6-1 im guessing 8 or 9 -1. I also think hes a play against. He might be one of those horses that doesn't ship well. I think you will end up seeing like 6 or seven horses between 6-1 and 10-1. Its California chrome deserved favorite and then everyone else. I personally don't bet favorites so Im gonna take a stab on samraat. I liked intense holiday but not with velasquez. Hasn't been same since his injury.

Horses get stepped on it in THE DERBY it seems more often than any other race. Scat Daddy was crippled in 2007, as were many other top horses in other years...

the clueless clowns are waiting for a horrific accident before they reduce the field to 14 for the boys.
