What a bunch of wieners horseplayers are ..i picked FROSTED he was 4th best in the race and got dusted by the horse every body suspected would win..AMERICAN PHAROAH is a freak he always was.this result was no surprise..i had futures exactas up the ning nang with AMERICAN PHAROAH and DORTMUND. did not like FIRNG LINE one bit.so i got nothing out of this derby..as for all the idiots harping on UPSTARTS last place finish the horse was clearly pulled up and was climbing and looking uncomfortable from the start.if you think he was the worst horse in the race good luck on your future handicapping. everybody commented that the grooms and exercise riders and jockeys and BAFFERT considered AMERICAN PHAROAH a better horse than DORTMUND and when they asked GARCIA who worked both horses what the difference between them was he responded simply "AMERICAN PHAROAH is fast" quite telling considering DORTMUND was considered a major player and was the likely front runner.even so i thought FROSTED would come late and give them a run for their money it never happened i was wrong the pace was slower than anticipated the favorite did not get worked up by the crowd and lived up to the hype.that simple.

In closing ,just remembered that John Pricci`s top four picks[Frosted,F Line,A.P and Dortmund] were the top four finishes in the Kentucky Derby. As a former Newsday subscriber ,i thought that i had to mention it and give credit where it is due! That guy`s still good at it !

It's still luck no matter how you slice and dice. He knew Materiality was gonna get pinched. I know he is still did it. Kudos

The best investment was really the 10 Cents 7 Jackpot or Pick 7. Keying American Pharoah and Dortmund on the bottom...... It paid over $27,000. GEM Springfield, Va.

"Firing Line is a tenacious horse but he simply isn't as fast as the top two. Even though he finished in front of Dortmund yesterday he remains a notch below the Baffert runners." Oh yeah? When was the last time you saw any jockey in the Derby -- never mind one in the HoF -- who didn't know how to get his horse to change leads in the stretch???? Firing Line ran the entire stretch on his left lead, and Gary Stevens made no effort to "get him over." If he had, F.L. would be your Derby winner. Embarrassing for Stevens, and inexcusable. Not unlike Alydar vs. Affirmed -- only Alydar did it with the same jock in all three T.C. races. And you're right: Andy Beyer is the biggest joke in racing history. Upstart!!!!

please,,don`t remind us of the great races of when Horse racing,of all types, was a great show to watch and bet!! Alydar,Affirmed,Seattle Slew etcc.Cauthen,Velasquez,Vasquez,Cordero, etcc .This is NOT nostalgia, but facts! Now even newspapers have given up on having Horse racing charts/picks in their ever slim sports pages,,Gossip,of any kind, has taken over.Same with television and magazines,,those which are still in existence.'those were the days',,

as far as wagering goes the Derby was a huge flop, as is often the case at CD and in Kentucky.....18 horses in the field and $100 million plus in the various betting pools and the best you could come up with was a 30-1 exacta payoff and 100-1 on the trifecta!
mooch More than 1 year ago
Before they had exactas you could play a "house exacta" at certain books. I played them at Caliente race track in Tijuana. On a house exacta you would times the winner's win payoff to the place horse's place price. The $2.00 house exacta on the Derby paid only $65.52.
Ray Sousa More than 1 year ago
Really ?..so a potential superstar racehorse live up to all the hype and defeats a good field and you thing its a flop. the fact that you get 30/1 on a exacta that was very logical considering the 3 favorites ran 1-2-3 . personally i did not like FIRING LINE (distance) but he was very close to DORTMUND in ability . you could have played the futures pool exactas pool 2 paid 658 and pool 3 paid 508 pool 4 paid 109 pool 1 only came back 58 but that was AP with the field.

100-1 on the triple with fav , 4th fav, 2nd fav. , and you're whining?
Bob More than 1 year ago
We can't really determine whether AP is a better horse than Dortmund since Dortmund and Firing Line basically did each other in during the early running of the race. What we do know is that Pharaoh got the worst of it trip-wise by far, as he was wide on both turns and not just little bit wide but very wide...suggesting that his margin of victory could have been much greater with a better trip. Winning from the 18 hole in the Derby is no small accomplishment and the horse deserves a lot of credit but, under a different set of circumstances I have my doubts that he is that much better than Dortmund. Firing Line is a tenacious horse but he simply isn't as fast as the top two. Even though he finished in front of Dortmund yesterday he remains a notch below the Baffert runners...that being said, the California contingent was clearly superior this year as it was last year and once again Todd Pletcher, the darling of the eastern racing establishment, lays a big egg in the Derby!

post 18 is a lot better than having posts 1-6 Every year the cavalry charge from the outside crushes the inside horses. The best way to understand it is to look at the winning post positions from the past 20 years. The winning numbers this year were 18-10-8-15 I'll have another...post 19
wolfgirl1 More than 1 year ago
I don't see it..Materiality was just as wide but pushed ,bumped and walked out of the gate and was trying to close.I do not think the Baffert horse had to work very hard no dirt no bumping I would call it a dream trip compared to the horses that were squeezed on the inside.Maybe the pull should go to the highest pointed horses because his top two had very bad positions.

You're an idiot Bob............let's just leave it at that. Dortmund beats FL by a nose and a head, then turns the tables on him in the Derby. Excuse for Dortmund packing it in? Was it the heat FL put on him, or was it just 'not his day'. Sounds like sour grapes to me Bobby. It was a great horse race, the top three are just a little better. AP will NOT win the TC..............I hope FL sits out the Preakness. Of the three he is the 1-1/2 horse.

Last point- I've been betting for 35 years (since i was 10) and i have never seen a California sweep. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
russell More than 1 year ago
After watching this race numerous times AP was the best horse by far. He chased the lead the entire race 3 wide. The only one that can beat him is Dortmund. Not sure how many races AP can run with a barshoe. If Baffert and his owners are smart just put him away and let Dortmund win the Preakness
Richard Kennedy More than 1 year ago
Russell, "the men in the white coats are coming to take you away, ha-ha." AP is still a Triple Crown possibility. Although, you know, FIRING LINE, will try to STEAL the PREAKNESS. - Racetrack Rik

It really upsets me that there were no 10 cent supers. The $1 bet helps those with huge payrolls. Another reason why I have no loyalty to twinspires.
Mu2 More than 1 year ago
10 cent supers? Are you serious ? In the 1930s during the great depression the minimum bet was 2 dollars. Now 80 yrs later you want to bet a dime? I would suggest you get a life or a job
Greg Scherr More than 1 year ago
It's not twinspires it's because the handle is so large and the lines at CD so long they want bets getting in and not a longer line for .10 bets, they can't offer .10 online and $1 on-site
billybudd16 More than 1 year ago
I know in NY when the dime supers started, they were a SAM machine only bet. Maybe that's where it should stay. Too much for verbal bets and we can have our dime bets back in the Derby...... P.S. to Mu2 That he (?) understand the bet before telling anyone to get a life or a job. Inflation has nothing to do with it.

never made a verbal 'soouper' bet at a track,,maybe i`d feel guilty having people waiting behind me;guess that i got shut out too many times at the local OTB from someone shooting numbers like if it were in an auction,,,Gotta thank those machines,,when they`re working,,,!!
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
sorry, but the 'Soouper' should not be less than Fifty cents! If you don`t have the top two winning selections in your exactas,Still in my mind the main bet, you`re done anyway. In the KD i had 18+3-2-8+10-14-2-3-8+ some others like Frosted for the 'sooup".The exacta[18-10] did not come in so that any combinations after that would have been a waste...at any price Funny, though,i bet two horses for WP,,,.3+ 10... always learn how to bet, from past mistakes,,
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
the exacta did not come in [ in my betting slips..]
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
Prof .Andy Beyer does it again!! Wow,the 'master' picked 'Upstart' with his own big FIG[the fruit, not the numbers!],,the HORSE finished L A S T ! Yeah,if your articles have to be read by 'subscribers only',good luck to that! Now you are your own worst enemy.
Richard Kennedy More than 1 year ago
At least we knew AP was the best. The "so-called" experts get it wrong, all the time. That being said, I made $2,800.00. but didn't have FIRING LINE enough, and thought that Mubtaahij would run 2nd. Oh well...
G More than 1 year ago
Mubtaahij got crushed when the outside horses came over. I liked him also and watched as they came out and the jock had to pull him up several times before the first turn, he was just climbing so he may have some cuts on his legs. AP just showed he was the best. I agree with Greg, Beyer speed ratings are uselss and more of a distraction if you even look at them, they do not have much of a purpose when you just take the time to read all of the workouts and other info.
Greg Scherr More than 1 year ago
I've been playing horses for 40+ years and to me the Beyer figs are useless, sure some people look at the highest # and play but anytime a figure can be adjusted arbitrarily and dramatically they have no value.
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
so Mr. Greg are you saying that with those #s Beyer could not 'make $50,ooo at the track' anymore[ like his ol` book said that he did]?The best book on racing, among several that i read many moons ago was one by MItchell in which he states in a page that' no matter how you win,do not tell anyone, especially other gamblers-bettors-'handicappers because they`ll think that you `re a fool who would not admit that you are a loser [like they are].Wonder if Tom Ainslie[?] book on "systems" is still worth while to peek. That book goes back about 35-40 yrs. All others on out closing,'out well',speed, speed figs, top three fav$,blah blah blah wasted my time, not my money because i never bought any of them,,but Mitchell is still with me some place ,with stained pages,i`m sure,, especially that one specific page,,,
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
i believe that 'handicappers, touts from newspapers and sports services should have an instantaneous system like 'twitter' where they can transmit their picks a few minutes before a race.Of course, with each call a la carte,at a single price or daily-weekly subscription,But not more than a week[5 days].Picking horses a day or two in advance is ,usually ,tough, especially when the 'late $" is alive...gave you a hint.Would you rather have a ML selection that`s not getting bet or a mid priced one taking 'new' action?
billybudd16 More than 1 year ago
You are correct, Sir !
James G Romano More than 1 year ago
In horse racing ,i do not ask for much, besides the PPs; Only an exacta chart.Ever since simulcasting from little out of town tracks has taken over all the available screens i miss the full time exacta #.,,and the old 'Sports Eye' fractions, both early speed and closers`.Yes,too much can be a problem/distraction,but who can play more than a couple of tracks simultaneously?Lots of times some of us just concentrate on ONE [unless we skip races like in NY winter[garbage ]racing!
Ray Sousa More than 1 year ago
in all fairness to BEYER the horse was pulled up..now granted he is a jinx..but that horse was fighting ORTIZ and climbing from the start he .out of the whole field he looked the most worked up and sweaty. And ran accordingly..but thats unknowable how a horse will react to a big crowd..BAFFERT stated that AMERICAN PHAROAH started loosing it in the paddock and they wetted him down and he cooled off and shut it down.so i guess a good trainer makes a big difference.
