Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for March 1

Girvin (left) and Untrapped, the top two finishers in the Risen Star Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds, have been added to the Derby Watch top 20.

Girvin and Untrapped, the one-two finishers in the Risen Star Stakes, are the two new members of the Derby Watch top 20. Girvin is 20-1 on the future line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper, for the Kentucky Derby on May 6, while Untrapped is 40-1. McCraken remains the favorite on Watchmaker’s line, but Irish War Cry – who runs on Saturday in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream – is now the second choice at 6-1, and Mastery is now the co-third choice at 8-1. One Liner also saw his price drop to 12-1 from 15-1.

Lookin At Lee and Mo Town were dropped from the list, but for different reasons. Lookin At Lee didn’t do anything wrong, he was just forced off the list by the performances of Girvin and Untrapped after being the longest shot on Watchmaker’s line a week ago. Mo Town was removed owing to his disappointing 3-year-old debut in the Risen Star, which again called into question the overall quality of the Remsen, whose form has not held up. Classic Empire, favored on Watchmaker’s line two weeks ago, is now the co-third choice at 8-1.

With both the Fountain of Youth and Gotham being run on Saturday, several runners have a chance to move onto the list, including Beasley and Lookin for Eight in the Fountain of Youth and Action Everyday, So Conflated, and True Timber in the Gotham.
