Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for April 6

Oscar Nominated after winning the Spiral Stakes at Turfway on Saturday. He is 30-1 on the Derby Watch top 20 list.

Fellowship, Majesto, and Oscar Nominated are the three newcomers to this week’s Derby Watch top 20, as the list increasingly makes room for those who have earned enough points to safely be in the field for the May 7 Kentucky Derby. Majesto and Fellowship were second and third in the Florida Derby. Oscar Nominated won the Spiral Stakes. All three are 30-1 shots on the future line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper.

The victory by Nyquist over Mohaymen in the Florida Derby caused Watchmaker to make Nyquist his new favorite for the Derby at 7-2. He was 6-1 a week ago. Mohaymen, last week’s favorite at 4-1, is now 8-1 but is the second choice.

Flexibility, Laoban, and Suddenbreakingnews all were forced off the list to make room for the three newcomers, but they still have one more Derby prep remaining, giving them a chance to get back onto the list. Flexibility is slated to run in the Wood Memorial on Saturday, Laoban is in the Blue Grass Stakes on Saturday, and Suddenbreakingnews is awaiting the Arkansas Derby on April 16. To balance his future line, Watchmaker tweaked the price on Zulu, raising him to 20-1 from last week’s 15-1.

:: ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays

With the Wood, Blue Grass, and Santa Anita Derby all on Saturday, opportunities abound for late-developing horses to move onto the list. Candidates to do so include Adventist in the Wood and both Cherry Wine and My Man Sam in the Blue Grass. All three have been knocking on the door.

Seriously, If you don't know anything about racing, keep your opinion to yourself...90% of these comments are a total waste of time, like talking about a maiden winning the KY Derby.

Trojan Nation? Well, you'll be the 1 guy betting him, least you'll get 100-1 on a MAIDEN. Yeah, no reason to gear him up.....like winning 1 maiden race. I'm a former race book director, jockey agent and horse owner, and I'll let you in on a secret....Any horse classy enough to win a Grade 1 race, especially a major race like the KY Derby, has enough class to break his maiden "in hand." If he were any type of real contender, he would have won against MDS without trying. You might ask why did he finish 2nd in the Wood? Simple...he loved the mud and caught a blistering :46 1/2 mile to close into against Outwork, who was only a 1x winner going into the Wood and Adventist (3rd), who is only a maiden winner....Seriously, he has less chance than CUPID, as I alredy explained had NO CHANCE BEFORE HE LOST the Arky Derby.

Carlos, with all due respect since you seem like a serious horseman,  you are dreaming here.  Trojan Nation is only horse bred to get the mile and a quarter in May and his Beyers, a 93 with Nyqvist at 94, put him right there.  Gallagher is a genius at preparing horses for this kind of distance and was pointing at Wood all along.  No reason to have him peak in the earlier preps - look where all those horses who won those are now.  Dancing Candy, Shagaf, Mohaymen.....

Why Cupid has no shot in the Kentucky Derby? Baffert trained him "all out" heading into the Rebel Stakes, which is obviously Baffert's "back-up" plan as kept his 1st string, Mor Spirit, at home in the big Santa Anita stakes. He will have tons of other speed pushing him in the 20 horse Derby field, such as the likes of Outwork, Zulu, Danzing Candy, etc. While he looked impressive winning the Rebel after breaking slow, let's not forget that Oaklawn Park favors speed with their short stretch. He barely held off Whitmore. Yes, Whitmore, who came 5th in the Delta Jackpot and also finished 2nd in the minor stakes, the Southwest, to Sudden Breaking News, who will be 80-1 in the Derby with NO real chance to play a factor. Whitmore has broken his maiden and won a 3-yo only $62,500 N2 life race on a secondary circuit, Oaklawn, at 6 furlongs in  pedestrian 1:10 2/5. Take it to the bank....Sudden Breaking News, Whitmore, Cupid and the rest of the 2nd stringers at Oaklawn Park will play no factor the first Saturday in May

And then there were 7...After Saturday's prep races there are now only 7 horses that have enough experience, breeding, ability to get 1 1/4 miles in the next month and running style to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby (I don't want to hear any other names, they have NO SHOT). 1) Nyquist, 2) Gun Runner, 3) Mo Tom 4) Mohaymen 5) Exaggerator 6) Brody's Cause 7) Destin

Why isnt Cupd getting more chatter ?...................He broke slow, rushed up into a  22 1/4 & a 46 1/2 and just kept getting stronger, while running green. I guess Baffert is going right to the Derby, I guess he has a strong feeling about the quality of Cupid !

He's in the Arkansas Derby

He will drop from 25-1 to 9-1 after Arkansas....buy now...

I agree...BUT...this lack of "chatter" has enabled me to get 25-1 through Will Hill and until I see differently I'm putting more on his nose....He looks the proper stuff to me.

Suddenbreakingnews will turn the tables on Cupid. He had a horrible trip in the Rebel and now he gets a1/16 more ground while getting a 7lb weight break from Cupid. If he doesn't get stopped this time, he will run by them all.
