Kentucky Derby: Twice the Appeal works under Borel, gallops out nicely

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sunland Derby winner Twice the Appeal was the only potential Kentucky Derby starter to work before the renovation break at Churchill Downs on Saturday, breezing six furlongs in 1:15.62 seconds under jockey Calvin Borel.

KENTUCKY DERBY NEWS: Track all the 3-year-olds on the Triple Crown trail

Working shortly after 6 a.m., Twice the Appeal went easily throughout, posting splits of 13.57 seconds, 26.19, 38.46, 50.54 and 1:02.80. The gallop out was perhaps the most dynamic part of the drill as Twice the Appeal contined out willingly all the way around the turn and pulled up a mile in 1:43.36.

Sway Away, who like Twice the Appeal is trained by Jeff Bonde, also worked six furlongs before the break. Currently 24th on the Derby graded earnings list, he completed the distance in 1:13.98 and galloped out seven-eighths in 1:27.62. He finished his final quarter in a very strong 23.13 but did switch back to his left lead in late stretch.

Three more Derby runners are expected to work after the renovation break at 8:30 a.m.: Shackleford, Animal Kingdom, and Mucho Macho Man.
